Paid Leave for All Workers Act (SB 208 initiative)

SB 208 was signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker on Monday.
This new law allows a worker to earn one hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked. A total of 40 hours can be accrued in a year.
The law goes into effect January 1, 2024.

This new law does not apply to seasonal employees, federal workers and college students working temporary jobs for their colleges.

* Paid time off can be used for any reason:recovery from illness, mental health needs, vacation, etc.
* The law covers domestic workers (nannies, caregivers, cleaners), including those working as independent contractors.
* Workers do NOT have to provide a reason why they are using paid time off.
* When possible, workers should notify their employer when using paid time off.
* Once the law goes into effect, workers can report any violations to the Illinois Department of Labor.
